Cookbook Front Cover

Cookbook Cover and Spine

The cover design features a fun graphic of a record player in motion, spinning a vinyl labeled 'Jams.' This playful design effectively establishes a visual tone and foreshadows the content contained within. The cover is made up of layers, textures, and delightful imagery, which adds a touch of entertainment to its overall appeal. However, the context of the book's contents may not be immediately apparent unless one reads the spine or back cover of the cookbook.

Contents

This cookbook is divided into four sections to suit different cooks, skill levels, and available ingredients. The sections are: a beginner's guide, simple recipes, pectin-free recipes, and a resources section. This organization helps users find the information they need, making the cookbook more useful and effective for various goals. The content of this cookbook was inspired by one of my family’s cookbooks, passed down through the years for canning and jarring.

Recipe Pages

I chose to create designs for several key pages in this cookbook, including the contents page, a section spread, a recipe spread, and a text-heavy table. I designed these pages because they provide a glimpse into how the design system operates throughout the cookbook. Each spread has a harmonious blend of typography and imagery, creating a balanced and visually appealing aesthetic. Furthermore, every section and recipe is paired with a curated song, adding an immersive and enjoyable experience for users as they cook.

Print Specs

Cover design specifications include a hardcover with gloss lamination and a cotton-wrapped spine. The book dimensions are 12x12 inches with a 1-inch spine. The interior pages are recommended to be 70 lb uncoated vellum, also measuring 12x12 inches, with a bleed of .25 inches and .25-inch margins. Additionally, there should be 1-inch interior margins.

Project Recap

For this project, I was tasked with designing a robust and versatile book layout system within the categories of art/artist books, collection/exhibition publications, or cookbooks. I chose to create a cookbook centred around locally-sourced breakfast food and easy-to-make spreads and jams. The unique aspect of this cookbook is that it pairs each recipe with a curated musical selection that complements the food's feel-good vibes. The book layout system was designed to be visually appealing, easy to navigate, and accommodating to users of different skill levels. Through this project, I was able to explore my personal interests while honing my design skills and developing a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic.

Reflection & Areas of Improvement

If I could continue this project, I would ensure I involve my designs in some kind of user testing. Whether that be a survey to find out how the illustrations resonate with the user group, or preforming material testing to see how the book holds up upon practical use in the kitchen. I believe by doing so, the design would become stronger and the insights I could gain would positively influence my overall design.
