Secondhand on Whyte
Project Overview
This imaginative project is from a design brief that asked students to map with the elements of time, motion, and space when creating a set of instructions or guides. In response to the brief, I set out to map all the independent secondhand stores located along Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue.

Project Details
-
The goal for this project was to highlight the importance of shopping consciously by sourcing from independent secondhand stores, thus encouraging the local audience to help reduce negative environmental and sociological impacts from the production of new items while enhancing the overall wellbeing of the community.
-
The solution for this project was to appeal to the local audience who values conscious living, thrifting, and sustainability to map all the places that support or feature up cycled items in their stores. By doing so, I was mindful of the ways in which sustainability extends to mobility and accessibility, thus this map utilizes simple iconography, legible type, and a simple colour palette to highlight elements such as distance, time, transportation, and other locations that would prove useful for the users.

Project Reflection
This project could not have happened without the many unique secondhand stores that call Edmonton home. I encourage you to visit their shops on Whyte Avenue and support them if possible. Please note that all store information was gathered from their websites or social media and may change. This project was based on individual research, so the information here should not be seen as a guide.
